garage door protection in winter

Winter is here, and it’s time to keep your garage door safe in the snow and other weather elements. Failing to do so can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your door and shorten its lifespan. In this blog post, we reveal 5 easy steps to help winterize your garage door.

Downsize

One of the best ways to keep your garage organized is to donate unneeded items and downsize. If your garage is so full that you can’t park your car in there, the best door in the world won’t protect your car from the winter elements. Get rid of anything that you won’t need in the spring. Buy large organizational bins and start in one corner of the garage, organizing and labeling as you go.

Replace Old or Worn Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping can turn brittle and will shrink with age. Be sure to replace old or worn weather strips and put a new layer of caulk on your doors and windows.

Check Cables and Rollers

Cables and rollers will wear down faster in the winter months, so be sure to check and ensure they are functioning correctly. Use a lubricating spray on these moving parts if necessary. Be sure to remove any leaves or other debris from the tracks as these can easily freeze and possibly cause a major accident if unnoticed.

Insulate

If your garage is not yet finished, adding insulation before winter hits is crucial. Be sure to cover all exposed pipes with fiberglass insulation. Seal all windows with weatherproof plastic or tarps. Exposed pipes can freeze and then possibly burst in weather that isn’t quite freezing, so be on the lookout.

Seal All Small Openings

Don’t just focus on the big, most obvious openings. Be sure that all of your small openings are sealed as well. This is especially true for electrical outlets that will allow cold air to seep into your garage and often go unnoticed. Look for a fire-blocking caulk at a hardware store for this task.
